Mr. Ira Schaefer
Coordinator of the Fine & Performing Arts
Mr. Schaefer graduated from SUNY Fredonia with his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. He went on to complete his Master of Education degree in School Administration from Salem State College. While currently the Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts for the Somerset Public Schools and Somerset Berkley Regional High School, he continues to teach String instruments at Somerset Middle School, having previously taught 4th and 5th grade Strings for 12 years. From 1991 – 2001, he was a String teacher in the Barnstable Public Schools, mainly in grades 6 -12. Mr. Schaefer’s guest conducting appearances include the 2015 Rockland County (NY) Junior All County Orchestra, the 2013 and 2007 All Cape and Islands Orchestra as well as the 2002 Maine District II High School String Orchestra. Mr. Schaefer performs regularly on Double Bass with the Plymouth Philharmonic and Falmouth Chorale and has performed with the Cape Cod Symphony and Simon Sinfonietta, as well as free lancing in Southeastern Massachusetts. Mr. Schaefer is a member of NAfME (The National Association for Music Education), ASTA (American String Teacher's Association), International Society of Bassists and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Mr. David M. Marshall
Director of Bands
David M. Marshall is a skillful and acclaimed conductor, music educator, composer, arranger, vocalist, saxophonist, and pianist. Mr. Marshall is a 1998 graduate of Berklee College of Music with a B.S. in Music Education and a 2010 graduate of American International College with a M.Ed in School Administration. From 1998 - 2007, he held the position of Director of Music for the Swansea Public School System in nearby Swansea, Massachusetts. He is currently in his ninth year as Director of Bands at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. There he directs the award winning "Blue Raider" Marching Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, the “Electrify” and “Amplified” Show Choir Pit Bands; as well as serves as technical director for the Spring Musical Production at the school, conductor of the Musical Production Pit Orchestra and acts as Winter Music Activities Director supervising all activities of the Winter Percussion and Winter Color Guard. In addition, he teaches Music Production and Engineering, History of Rock 'n' Roll and History of Broadway.
Under his direction, many of his performing ensembles have excelled and earned numerous group and individual awards at festivals and competitions throughout Massachusetts, as well as in New York City, Bridgeport (CT), Washington D.C., Allentown (PA), Virginia Beach (VA), Annapolis (MD), Dover (DE) and in Disney World in Orlando, FL. Most notably, he recently led the SBRHS “Blue Raider” Marching Band to national success in November of 2015 when they traveled to Dover (DE) and won the 2015 USBands Division 1A National Championship as well as receiving the Cadets Award of Excellence and the Division 1A National Caption Awards for Best Music, Best Percussion, Best Color Guard, and Best Visual. Many of his former and current students have successfully auditioned for the Southeastern District MMEA and Massachusetts' MMEA All-State Honors Ensembles, as well as have perused careers in music performance, music education, and in the United States Armed Forces. Additionally, he is an active member of the following music organizations: NAfME (The National Association for Music Education), MMEA (Massachusetts Music Educators' Association), TI:ME (Technology Institute for Music Educators), NESBA (New England Scholastic Band Association) and USBANDS (formerly the United States Scholastic Band Association).
Mr. Marshall was a performing member of The East Bay Summer Wind Ensemble from 1990 to 2005 on alto saxophone and was the ensemble's assistant conductor from 1996-2005 under the tutelage of Mr. Robert Arsenault. Starting in 2006, he took over as the Director and President of the East Bay Summer Wind Ensemble, East Bay Summer Youth Ensemble and the East Bay Association of the Arts, Inc. The organization's mission is to provide community musicians (amateur, student and professional) with a quality summer music experience while providing first-rate traditional and contemporary band music performances to neighboring communities. Each summer these ensembles perform in many summer concert venues throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.
In addition to his teaching, directing, and conducting duties; Mr. Marshall also works as a professional arranger and composer for area show choirs and marching bands. His arrangements and compositions have earned some of those ensembles both local, regional and national titles. In 2008, he was selected by The Cambridge Who's Who as the 2008 Executive of the Year representing the Music Education Industry. In 2012, the United States Army recognized Mr. Marshall's achievements by presenting him with a special award for "Excellence in Musical Leadership and Band Direction" for his contributions towards the 2012 All-American Marching Band. Mr. Marshall is also a freelance performing and recording artist as a saxophonist, pianist, and vocalist. He also services in the music ministry at St. Mary's Church in Bristol, RI. Mr. Marshall is a life-long resident of Bristol, RI where he currently lives happily with his wife, Carrie and two children, David and Sarah.
Mr. Samuel M. Bianco
Director of Choirs
Mr. Bianco is a 2010 graduate of Ithaca College with a double B.M. in Music Education and Vocal Performance. In the spring of 2011, he held the position of Choir Director for the Westborough Public School System in Westborough, Massachusetts. For the 2011-2012 school year Mr. Bianco was a music substitute and private voice teacher for his alma mater the West Genesee Central School District in Camillus, New York where he also has spent the last 5 years teaching the pit percussion section for the 30 time state champion Wildcat Marching Band.
Mr. Bianco is currently in his first year as Director of Choirs at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. His duties include: Director of The Treble Choir, Concert Choir, Chorale and the Co-Director of the Spring Musical. In addition, he teaches Vocal Techniques, Guitar 1 and 2, and Music Foundations I.
