Years in Program: 4

Life after School:

I spent 6 1/2 years teaching strings in Somerset (1988-1994). I remember my students and experiences with great fondness and love. I have been married to Eric Badertscher for 10 years...after meeting him at grad school at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. We have one daughter, Sarah, who is 8. She is quite the dancer, artist, and violin player in her own right. I run my own string studio in Annapolis, teaching privately and building ensembles to play in the community. I try to teach my students the passion and love for music and the arts that was taught to me as I grew up in Somerset. I also play in several orchestras in the Annapolis area, including lots of musical theatre which is very popular around here.

Experience with Somerset Music:

My experiences are unique in that I have been both a student and a teacher in the Somerset Music Dept. As a student, I was challenged and pushed to be the best I could be. There were so many experiences....concerts, trips, rehearsals, friendships made. As a teacher, I was also challenged to be the best I could be...I was very grateful to be able to work in the Music Dept. for my first teaching job out of school. I learned so much from my peers and from the students themselves. I hope that I gave my students some of the experiences and memories that were given to me.

Music continues to be a big part of my life. No matter what I am doing or where life may take me, there always has to be music around me, it is uplifting.

Experience with Somerset Music:

The Somerset Music Department was the highlight of my high school career. I made some of my best and greatest friends there. Everything from singing in the auditorium to marching down Main St. USA in Disney remains a happy and loved memory in my heart and mind. Finding that connection to music in my life meant more than most of what I actually learned at the school. I will never forget it. Violist with the National High School Honors Orchestra in Anaheim, CA.  After high school I received a 5-Year Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Performance Emphasis from the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, CT, graduating summa cum laude and valedictorian.  I taught high school music for a year in New Hampshire, and then received a Master of Arts in Music Education with Performance Emphasis and a Minor in Music Education Research from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, graduating summa cum laude. I returned to Somerset after about 6 years in the Seattle area, teaching and performing. I have a daughter named Amelia who was born in 2005. Now I am teaching area violin and viola students privately here at home in Somerset and loving it!  : )

Many of my students have been chosen to perform with the Southeastern Massachusetts Senior and Junior District Orchestras, Massachusetts All-State Orchestra, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Fall River Symphony.  Some students have been featured soloists with the Fall River Symphony, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and various high school and collegiate orchestras.  Students have gone on to major in music performance or music education, double major in music, minor in music, or continue to enjoy playing as adults.
I teach students of all ages and ability levels, from young beginners to advanced and adult learners.

Experience with Somerset Music:

In fourth grade my life changed!  A group of older kids in the string ensemble came to play for us at Pottersville School and I suddenly had to play the violin!  After a few weeks I volunteered to switch to the viola and my career path was set in motion.  I cannot imagine what my life would be like without music and what the middle and high school years would have been like without the wonderful Somerset Music Department and Mr. Soares and Dr. Perry.  I am so grateful for this town's music department and very happy to be teaching violin and viola students from Somerset and the surrounding communities.  I am especially glad that I am having the opportunity to give back to the music department that gave me so much.  Thank you Somerset Music Department!

I married my beautiful wife Suzanne in April 2005 and we own a home in Somerset.

Experience with Somerset Music:

The experiences I had with the Somerset Music Department were not only fun and rewarding, but also where I met some of my best friends, defining my high school years. The musical and personal lessons I learned helped to build my confidence, self esteem, work ethic and shape who I've become as a person in the years since I graduated. I owe much to the hard work and dedication of my directors, teachers, and the Friends of Music. I'll always remember my years in the Somerset Music program as some of the best of my life!

Years in Program: 4

Life after School:

I am still very much involved in music, both as a composer and a performer. I am currently a member of the Middlesex Concert Band (Wakefield, MA) and the Charles River Wind Ensemble (Watertown, MA). I have previously played with such groups as the Tri-County Symphonic Band (Marion, MA), the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Symphony (Norton, MA), the Atlantic Wind Symphony (South Lancaster, MA), the Great Woods Chamber Orchestra (Norton, MA), the North Tiverton Band (North Tiverton, RI), the South Shore Circus Concert Band, and Pesante Brass, a semi-professional tuba quartet that I helped to form, and also write and arrange music for. In April of 2006 I was featured as euphonium soloist with the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Symphony at their annual spring concert, performing the "Willson Suite" by Robert W. Smith and "Seascape: A Dramatic Intermezzo" by Alfred Reed. I have also given private instrumental lessons to junior high and high school-aged students, and acted as an adjudicator for the Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters Association’s Junior/Senior Music Festival auditions. As a composer, I have written music for many special events and occasions. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and theory from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. My music has been performed or used in venues such as the Annual Southeastern Massachusetts Low Brass Symposium, the Epic Brass Summer Brass Players’ Institute, the Northeast Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, and the 2003 Minnesota Fringe Theater Festival. I am currently working on a song cycle for mezzo-soprano and wind ensemble based on poems by my friend, and fellow Somerset High alum, poet/playwright Timothy Matos. To help pay the bills, I am also currently working for the Exchange Network, a telemessaging service located in North Billerica, MA, and have previously worked for such companies as Barnes & Noble, Borders and Bose Corporation. I will be getting married in November 2007 to my college sweetheart, Elizabeth.

Experience with Somerset Music:

I would not be who or where I am today without the experiences I had through the music dept. at Somerset High. I have Bob Perry, Bruce Maggs and Bob Soares to thank for teaching me not only how to be a good musician, but how to be a good person in general. I will always treasure the time I spent and the friends I made there.

Life after School:

I graduated with my Bachelor's of Music in Music Therapy in 1990. I have worked continuously as a Board-Certified Music Therapist since then. I stayed in the Miami area until 1998 and worked with Special Needs Children/Adults, Geriatrics, Hospice, Rehab and Psychiatric patients. I married my husband, Robert Lenz, in 1991 and we have 1 daughter, Jackie, born in January of 1998. He is a journalist who was raised in Miami and consistently worked in Spanish news, both at the local and national level. In 1998 we left Miami to go to Atlanta and CNN where he is now a Director of News Coverage at CNN En Espanol. I have continued to work and am currently contracting music therapy services to special needs children through Metro Music Therapy.  I am also a certified Music Together instructor. Even though I now sing and play guitar more, I still play flute/piccolo and have taught lessons out of my home on both guitar and flute. My daughter is in high school and, of course, loves music. She sings and plays the string bass.  Both Jackie and I have been involved in Community Theatre for the past 8 years and I am currently the music director for Acting Up Theatre . Life has thrown us some curveballs, but doesn't it do that to everyone? Overall, we are happy, content and count our blessings everyday!

Experience with Somerset Music:

I found a second family in the Music Dept. at Somerset. By the time I graduated, I was spending almost the majority of my time at the school and, in either the band room or the auditorium. I learned to always be myself and strive for excellence. It was always the best and most influential aspect of my high school life. Mr. Perry (or Dr. Perry as I've learned!), and Mr. Maggs were always a constant source of inspiration and support.

Life after School:

I am going to BCC and majoring in Theatre. I still sing and dance, just not as much anymore. I have been working with different theatre companies in MA, such as Star Players of Bristol County, Youth Musical Theatre Corporation and Canton Community Theatre. Right now I am looking for work in the theatre, but I am working as a dishwasher.

Experience with Somerset Music:

I have had good times with the music department, I have had bad times with them as well but you can't have one without the other right? I was dance captain for the show choir from the start until 2006, so 2 years. I got my start with Guys and Dolls playing Harry the Horse under the direction of Michael Winslow. After that I joined the concert choir and took part in the two plays after Guys and Dolls in the ensemble of Jekyll & Hyde and Aida. I have learned a lot from all the students and teachers of the music department and I must say its one of the only things I miss about high school.

Experience with Somerset Music:

My experience in the Somerset Music Department is sooo beyond words. It is without a single doubt a part of my life that I will never forget. The friendships I built were amazing and still support me to this day. I cannot put into writing the happiness, excitement, fear and sorrow, I experienced with many amazing people. The trip to Virginia Beach, some really hard transitions of directors, all the sweat and hard work building sets, there's just too many to list. It's an experience that changed me "For Good" (Marching Band 2008) and I'll "keep you close as always"

Chris Mello - Class of 1993

Los Angeles, CA

Guitar & Trumpet

Jazz Band, Marching Band, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band & Orchestra

Directors: Dr. Robert Perry

Years in Program: 4

Life after School:

I currently divide my work between active performing the Los Angeles Studio Recording Industry, Touring, and College-Level teaching. I completed my Doctoral Degree from USC in Studio Guitar in 2007, a Master's Degree from University of North Texas( 2000), and a BA from UMASS. Some of my most recent credits include recording/touring for: "The Simpsons", Norah Jones, The Dixie Chicks, Latin Grammy Awards, Nelly Furtado, American Idol, Dr. Dre, Paul Schaeffer, Vanessa Williams, Wicked, VH1, Taco Bell, Verizon and others. I have written (2) Guitar Instructional Music publications for Mel Bay Publishing and serve as a columnist for Just Jazz Guitar Magazine. I have had the privilege to make a living through music, tour the world, and meet new challenges daily through my instrument and music.

Experience with Somerset Music:

Dr. Bob Perry was the rare type of person who fought for Music & Arts in area where it is time and again taken for granted (to this day). His example, passion, and encouragement helped to motivate me to pursue a career in music and have the courage follow my dream, when others thought that the only legitimate option in the field was that of a Music Educator. All of us alumni, and the community of Somerset as a whole, owe him and people like Alice Arruda a great cultural debt.My experiences at SHS left me better prepared than many of my classmates as I began college.

Experience with Somerset Music:

The band room was basically my home in high school. I was down there every time I had a study and many times when I had class. All of the activities were awesome and I love having made friends through music. The directors were great. They knew how to teach, but also how to have a sense of humor. Music made my high school years so much better...and oh ya, THE DISNEY TRIP IN 2006 WAS THE BEST WEEK OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!

Life after School:

I declared a music major at Vassar coupled with a medieval/Renaissance studies minor. I now prefer to work primarily in the field of early music (800-1750 C.E.), and I directed Vassar's early music chorus for two years. I also was a member of the Madrigal Singers and the College Choir. For two years I took voice lessons with esteemed counter tenor Drew Minter, and with his partner James Ruff for an additional two. I also was an accompanist for the college's Women's Chorus for two years, as well as for a local children's chorus - the Capella Festival Treble Choir - for three years. I also temporarily worked at a local Catholic church as a cantor for funerals, and have played piano for weddings before. In the winter of 2010, I also was the accompanist for Orange County's High School honor's choir in New York state, under the direction of Christine Howlett. In the fall of 2009, I had a choral piece premiered by the Madrigal Singers, a setting of the Ave Maria text. I have continued to write choral music, and hope to have this recorded as soon as possible. My sophomore year, I presented a recital of Schumann's Dichterliebe; junior year, a recital of German lieder, French medieval virelais and French art song; this year I will be working on my senior recital, which will consist of Trouvère music, Hildegard antiphons, 20th-century English art song, as well as music of Fauré, Berlioz, and Beethoven. Currently, I am employed by Vassar's music department as the music history intern, which allows me to teach music students introductory musicology. In the summer of 2010, I participated in the Amherst Early Music program, where I worked with French soprano and director of the Boston Camerata, Anne Azéma, as well as Shira Kammen on the music of the Troubadours and Trouvères. In May of 2010, I was asked to provide music for a Kaleidoscope event put on by the art department in conjunction with other professors from the medieval/Renaissance studies department. On October 28th, 2010, we will be celebrating a 13th-century Spanis

Experience with Somerset Music:

At Somerset High School, I learned that I was destined to pursue music as a career. It taught me the importance of community in music-making, as well as the value of dedication, determination, and pride in one's work. It equipped me with the tools one needs to go about rehearsal professionally. It of course also allowed me to make deep familial connections with people.

It helped me keep my goals in check, and the best thing that it did was help me find the friends, which might as well be family, that I have now.

Life after School:

I'm at UMass Dartmouth doing psychology and after that I'm probably going to do neuroscience.

Experience with Somerset Music:

I still play bass all the time, but the music department was what started me off playing in the first place. Everyone I met in high school was related to me joining pit band my sophomore year. Getting into the music department literally changed everything for me. I wouldn't be the person I am without it at all. The people I met at different schools and in my own bands were the basis for my entire personality, and all of my good memories come from competitions and music department related activities. Other good things have happened to me, but when I look back at a memory fondly or with any sense of nostalgia, that memory was definitely from my years playing bass for Somerset.

Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ was right, there is no place like home. After having lived in New York for a few years, I convinced my husband to move to Somerset to start our family. Jim and I have an overly energetic 6 year old who loves his guitars and wants drums in the worse way. I work for the State of Massachusetts as an analyst and keep my Emergency Medical Tech license current. I knew coming back to Somerset would mean Musictown, and this year, Mrs. Arruda has given me the honor of Alumni Liason, so I'll be in touch with all of you!

Experience with Somerset Music:

I've performed in Disney World, Virginia Beach, the Mall in Washington DC and football games all over the state. However, the memory that will stay with me forever,is being one of a few that had the pleasure for performing on the front lawn of Mr. Carl McDermott's house for all 4 years, before his death in 1990. It was that experience that taught me that life is about giving, not receiving.

Years in Program: 4

Life after School:

After high school I attended Rhode Island College, taught middle school music in Taunton, played for numerous famous musicians throughout MA, RI and CT such as Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and more. Got married in 1994 to my wonderful husband Jim and instead of starting a family I started racing motorcycles with him. I have always continued performing and still do along with other talented musicians in my group Aire of Elegance as well as solo. Today along with regularly performing, my husband and I own and run Simcock Farm in Swansea and travel with our motorcycles as much as the farm allows. We purchased the family farm in 2001 and have 19 "furkids". Life couldn't be better or more well rounded!

Experience with Somerset Music:

I would like to thank Dr. Perry for the great four years of playing in the Somerset High School Orchestra and String Ensemble and encouraging me to always strive for more. Without that foundation I would have never had all the wonderful experiences I have had over these past 20+ years. Thank you for all the encouragement and pride you showed during those four years.

Well, some things never change, including my incessant need to impulsively explore all things that interest me. I went on to complete Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in applied cello and music education, as well as a Master's Degree in Library Science. I currently live in Nashville, TN with my husband of 7 years, Jason. I work full-time at Belmont University as the managing librarian of the Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Serials Unit. I still play cello professionally when the gigs come along and I am enjoying breaking out of my classical training mold, learning to improvise, read charts and play with world-class musicians at my church. I also hope to join Nashville's Drum and Bugle Corp, The Music City Legend. You can take the girl out of the drum major uniform, but you can't take the drum major out of the girl ;-)

Experience with Somerset Music:

At the risk of sounding melodramatic, my experiences in the music department really shaped my life. Moments like leading the band down the streets of Epcot are part of my fond memories, but more importantly, I feel blessed that I still maintain friendships with some of my dearest friends from the music department. Dr. Perry always saw more potential in me than I saw in myself and I appreciate the challenges he offered me.

It was an incredible experience that played a huge part in shaping the person that I am today. And it INSPIRED me. The connections that I made with my fellow students and teachers/directors convinced me that that was what I wanted to do with my life. Our middle guy (17) is a junior in high school. Our youngest (14) is becoming an accomplished guitarist and songwriter. All of our boys are musical and talented. I am currently teaching 3-4 year olds with special needs in a public school. We use music in our classroom for so many things...I can't begin to tell you!

Experience with Somerset Music:

My entire family was involved in the music department for many years....Stan, Eric and I have many happy memories of band trips, football games...etc.

Marching Band, Women's Chorus & Show Group

Director: Dr. Robert Perry, Mr. Bruce Maggs & Mr. Kiah O'Brien III

Life after School:

I currently live in Midlothian, Virginia with my husband Scott and 2 of our 3 children. I am an administrator of Special Education for Chesterfield County Public Schools. We are avid supporters of the arts in public school and the community. Our daughter Kathryn has turned us into "crazy show choir parents" We enjoy traveling with her competitive music groups all over the country.

Experience with Somerset Music:

My experiences with the SHS musical groups helped to shape my character and helped me through some very difficult personal times. I enjoyed every aspect the rehearsals, the performances and the travel. Mr. Perry was a huge positive influence in my life. I often refer to his "words of wisdom" and remember him with great admiration and appreciation!

Trombone, Cello & Oboe

Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, String Ensemble & "The Music Man"

Director: Dr. Robert Perry & Mr. Bruce Maggs

Years in Program: 4

Life after School:

I lived and worked in Washington, DC right after college. Then, I got married and moved to Atlanta. Worked in my field, International Business. Past 10 years, I've been raising 2 sons. I play in the
Seed & Feed Marching Abominable Band and my church orchestra. My 12 year old son is now playing trombone with me. Younger son wants to play bugle. I'm active as a Boy Scout Leader as well.

Experience with Somerset Music:

Music was everything to me at SHS. All my friends were in band. I spend all my spare time playing. Mr. Perry was definitely my most influential teacher. His lessons on mediocrity and Bill Cosby's Noah are still with me today. SHS Band trip to DC freshman year ('81) helped me to fall in love with DC, where I went to college.
